Today, as I watched this sailboat making its way toward the White Bear Yacht Club, I remembered some interesting history about White Bear Lake.
F. Scott Fitzgerald spent the summer of 1922 in a rented apartment at the White Bear Yacht Club.
Shortly after this he began work on The Great Gatsby. In 1922, yachting culture was at the center of social and recreational life in White Bear Lake. Many stories have been told about the famous author's and his wife, Zelda's, stay that summer. Many involve drinking and partying. What is true and what is myth may be unclear, but I find it romantic to consider that one of the most famous American novels, The Great Gatsby, was perhaps inspired by events that happened right here. Nearly one hundred years later, the Yacht Club is still in business.
