Red-winged blackbirds are easy to recognize. The males are black with red epaulets (bordered with yellow) on their wings. Females are brown and streaky with a bit of orange coloring near the throat. Red-winged blackbirds return to Minnesota in the spring and often build nests near cattails, reeds and grasses. I was happy to see this one in Lions Park today. I looked up when I heard it calling "Okalee!" and I snapped the photo just before it flew off.

Lions Park in White Bear Lake is working to restore the shoreline habitat.

Shoreline Habitat Restoration Project

Using native plants between the land and water benefits this aquatic ecosystem. The native plants provide food, shelter and nesting sites for the fish and wildlife. The plants also help to control erosion, protect water quality, and stabilize the sediment on the lake bottom. All while looking beautiful!
