Most lightning occurs within clouds and it is amazing to watch. Lightning is so hot that it heats the air around it to temperatures hotter than the sun. This heat causes the air to expand rapidly. The air vibrates as it expands, and this vibration is what we hear as thunder.

It's fun to watch a lightning storm, but stay in a safe place. In our lifetime, we have about a 1 in 5000 chance of being struck by lightning.
