Day 64: Squirrel!

July 30, 2019

7:55 pm, 71 degrees.

Tonight I came across one of Minnesota's most common wildlife species: a gray squirrel. The squirrel and I stopped to look at each other for a few moments, and I was able to take this picture. Squirrels are unlike many other wildlife species in that they do well in areas with houses and people. In fact, their numbers have been increasing in recent years. This is because there are few predators and ample food sources for them, including gardens and garbage cans. Mostly squirrels like to eat acorns. In fact, they can hide about 25 acorns in a half an hour. When they get hungry later, they go back to retrieve them and usually find about eighty percent of the nuts they buried. This helps the environment because the forgotten buried acorns may grow into oak trees. Squirrels can be pesky, but they aren't all bad!
