Day 46: This Lake has a New Name

July 12, 2019

Now known as Lake Bde Maka Ska

I've long known this location as Lake Calhoun, located in Minneapolis. I recently learned that, back in the 1800's, the lake was named after John Calhoun who was the seventh vice president of the United States, under President Andrew Jackson. Apparently Mr. Calhoun thought slavery was a good idea, and people today have decided that it wasn't cool to name a lake after him.

So now the lake is called Lake Bde Maka Ska, which is what the Dakota Indians called the lake prior to the 1800's when the Europeans arrived. It means "Lake White Earth."
