It's a waxing gibbous moon tonight. This means that the moon is getting bigger and in the coming nights we will see more and more of the moon until it becomes a full moon on August 16th. The word gibbous refers to the shape of the moon and it means that what we see is not a round circle as in a full moon, but larger than a third quarter moon, of which we can see a half-circle. Waxing gibbous moons rise in the late afternoon. This photo was taken at 8:05 pm and it is not yet dark outside.
