About a half hour hike up into the hills from Avalon, you'll find the Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Garden. According to the Catalina Island Conservancy website, the memorial honors the memory of William Wrigley Jr., the guy who founded Wrigley chewing gum. He played a great role in the development of Catalina Island, as he was the one who determined that the island would be protected from development. The memorial is the centerpiece of the botanical garden, and it is amazing to see.

There are many beautiful plants to see in the garden, and the emphasis is on plants that grow on California islands, but no place else in the world. Many of these plants are rare or endangered.
Matilija Poppy habitat: Open, flat sandy bottoms. Only in Avalon.
