Day 33: Butterfly made of Waste Material

Updated: Jul 10, 2019

June 29, 2019

Flying high above the rotunda in the Mall of America is this giant monarch butterfly. It was created by artist Christopher Lutter-Gardella and, according to the posted signs, was made entirely of materials from the waste stream. More than 600 plastic spoons were used to make the eyes of the butterflies. Other materials include a wire clothes hanger, dryer lint, plastic bags, and a window screen. The sign states that "when we start to see things differently, we realize the smallest changes truly can have a big impact."

Did you know that milkweed is the only plant on which monarch caterpillars can survive?

The monarch butterfly population is declining mostly due to loss of habitat. What can we do to help? Plant milkweed! Adult monarchs get their nectar from many different plants. In Minnesota, these include Black-eyed Susan, Eastern purple coneflowers, and Culver's root. These native plants will attract monarchs and look beautiful so please consider them when planting your garden as well.
