Canary Island date palms of Catalina Island

Phoenix canariensis, also known as the Canary Island date palm, was brought to California in the 1700's from the Canary Islands. They are beautiful trees and add a lovely tropical feel to the beach areas near Avalon. Because the trees are not native to Catalina, you will not see them on the interior of the island. The Catalina Island Conservancy works to keep the island interior in its natural state so ... the Canary Island date palms will have to be content with their lives near the beaches. If I were one of these trees, I wouldn't mind at all!
