Day 22: Undersea Exploration at Catalina Island

Updated: Jul 6, 2019

June 18, 2019

Over one hundred years ago, glass bottom boats were invented on Catalina Island and curious tourists were amazed to be able to view what was beneath the sea. Today, glass bottom and semi-submersible boats still offer a fun opportunity to learn about life under water. The Catalina Island Company offers the Undersea Expedition and it is a great way to view the fish found off the coast of Lover's Cove. This video captures a few moments of the tour and there are several fish that can be identified.

The kelp bass are the brownish colored fish with lots of white blotches on the upper sides. They have just a bit of yellow on the fins.

The opaleye are the dark colored fish with a white spot or two at the base of the dorsal fin.

The Garibaldi are easy to identify: they are the orange fish near the bottom of the picture. They are one of two official state fish of California, the other being the freshwater golden trout.
