In the chaparral environment of Catalina Island, the prickly pear cactus is everywhere. Be careful if you are hiking on the island as these cacti have spines that look like splinters and hairs. If you brush against them, they can break off into your skin. Ouch! The flowers are yellow and apparently edible, although I have not tried to eat them. I had never seen a prickly pear cactus before this trip to California and I've got to say that they really are beautiful - just don't get too close!
